A Children’s Writing Camp

at Weymouth

3^rd grade through 5^th grade

Monday, August 2- Wednesday, August 4

9 am until noon

Day One: Songwriter and performer Rae Anne Kinney and poet Malaika King Albrecht will teach campers how to write lyrics for songs and how to write poems. Participants will have a chance to create their own masterpieces and to perform them.

Day Two: Nonfiction and Fiction: Writers Cos Barnes and Karen Gilchrist will teach participants about the basics of writing short personal essays and short stories. Around a virtual camp fire each child will get a chance to share their story.

Day Three: Free-lance writer Ellen Marcus will teach how to get the facts straight, Kit Kitteridge style. Participates will interview Weymouth Board members and write articles about their interviews. Parents are invited to attend the last 30 minutes of camp for a reading of some of the participants’ creative writings.

Campers will bring their own snacks and drinks. Please register with Hope Price at 692-6261 because there is a limited amount of space in the camp. Cost for the camp is $30.

The Twenty-second Annual Moore County Writers’ Competition

Submission Guidelines (No separate application form is needed.):

• The competition is open to students and residents of Moore County, NC.
• Entries must be original, unpublished, and not currently entered in other competitions.
• Entries must be typed, double-spaced on one side of 8½ by 11-inch paper with the pages numbered. 

Please note: Handwritten and/or single-spaced manuscripts and entries that exceed the word count limit will not be accepted.

• You must include a cover sheet for each entry with name, address, telephone number, title, category, word count, and age group (grade and school, or adult).
• Name should appear only on the cover sheet.
• Submit two (2) copies of each manuscript. Entries not sent in duplicate will not be accepted.
• Entries become the property of Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities.

 Deadline: Mail entries to Weymouth Center, P.O. Box 939, Southern Pines, NC 28388. Mailed entries must be postmarked by Friday, February 5, 2010. Entries may also be delivered to Weymouth Center, 555 E. Connecticut Avenue, Southern Pines, by 2 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010. Entries that do not meet the submission guidelines above will not be accepted. Please save your entry as a Word or RTF document. Winners will be asked to email their entries after notification.

Judges are provided by the North Carolina Writers Network.

 Notification: Winners will be notified by mail in mid-March. Awards will be distributed and first-place winners will be invited to read a selection from their winning entries at Weymouth Center on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 2 p.m.

Publication: Winning manuscripts will be included in a special writers’ publication available at Weymouth Center, The Country Bookshop, and the Arts Council of Moore County. Weymouth Center has first publication rights and reserves the right to edit or excerpt manuscripts before publication.
